This is a very special issue of With Jamie because it is our first on Substack! Most of you have been reading this newsletter for years so you know what it’s all about, but for newbies: welcome to my bi-weekly rundown on all things politics, food, books, travel, and culture.
With Substack, we’re able to roll out a bunch of new features. The newsletter will stay free, but there are now perks for those compelled to become Paid Subscribers or even join the ranks as an illustrious Founding Member.
For those of you who are already members of Lunch With Jamie, you will receive all of the benefits of the Founding Membership below.
🥟All subscribers:
From time to time, I will host events, like my recent talk with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro at Genghis Cohen in LA. Subscribers will hear about these events first and get access to tickets.
I will be launching a bookstore where you can browse all of my favorite books, featuring works by the guests of my online interview series, Lunch With Jamie.
🥟🥟Paid subscribers:
Paid Subscribers will have access to the entire With Jamie archive (over 100 issues).
Now, when you are trying to remember that random restaurant in Paris or Prague, you can easily search for it on the With Jamie archive page.
🥟🥟🥟Founding members:
Founding Members will also receive my personal city guides that I use when I travel, filled with can’t-miss eats, hotels and activities. I started with New Orleans, arguably my favorite city in the world for a weekend trip!
The first one is available for free now, and going forward they will come out quarterly. Up next: London.
🥟🥟🥟🥟 Lunch With Jamie Membership:
For those who want to be a part of the inner circle, apply to join the Lunch With Jamie community. The core of this is the members-only online series, where thought leaders — from politics to entertainment — discuss the most pressing issues of our time. You will also get all of the benefits listed above, as well as early access to tickets for LWJ Live Events.
This newsletter can only be as good as the community that it serves. Do you have requests, suggestions, or ideas? Don’t hesitate to reach out to me at jamie@withjamie.com as we grow With Jamie together!
True Loaf in Miami
Cuisine: Bakery
Crew: Jon Shook, Vinny DoTolo, Karim Sabet, Jamie Patricof, Mark Patricof
What to Order: PB&J, almond croissant, cranberry pecan sourdough, chocolate peanut butter cookie, BLT, baguettes
Notes: Not only is this one of the best bakeries I’ve ever been to, it also has a can’t-miss peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Kind of crazy that owner Tomas Strulovic left a career in finance to open this bakery in 2013 … without even knowing how to make bread.
If you happen to be in Miami for Shabbat and want a challah, make sure to get there early.
Son of a Gun in Los Angeles
Cuisine: Seafood
What to Order: Onion dip, pimento cheese, son of a gun caesar, lobster roll, shrimp toast and fried chicken sandwiches, linguine and clams (with uni), smoked mahi dip, smoked baby back ribs. Honestly, the entire menu is awesome, so you can’t go wrong.
Notes: Tucked in a small nondescript location on Third Street, this seafood-focused gem has been serving some of the best food in LA since it opened 13 years ago. It’s known for its lobster roll and fried chicken sandwiches, but don’t leave without trying their shrimp toast.
Kelly and I have been eating at this restaurant by Jon Shook and Vinny DoTolo (of Jon & Vinny’s fame) since it opened. They are also our favorite event caterer. Pro Tip: If you hire Carmelized Productions for an event in LA you can ask them to make any of the dishes from SOAG (as it’s casually referred to).
And go now. SOAG is shutting its doors on October 13th. The only silver lining is that this will give the fellas more time to grow their empire. They just opened a new J & V in Studio City, which has been packed and even has a nice bar scene (safe to say the valley has been desperate for them to open).
Stella with Jordan Okun and Max Shapiro; Kinoko Sushi with Kelly and Riley; Sutton's Drug Store with Anderson Clayton, Kelly, and Riley; Bombolo with Erin Matson, Romea Riccardo, Kelly, and Riley; Gourmet Kingdom, Mr. Beef & Giordano's solo; XU Catering with Riley and the UNC Women’s Field Hockey Team; Kipos Greek Taverna with Kelly, Riley, Dan & Jenny Levy; Mae Malai Thai House of Noodles with Kevin Iwashina; Kazu Nori with Jordan Okun; Joan’s on Third with Stazy Mazo and Anna Braz; Intuit Dome with Howard Altman and Tony Sawer; Luv2Eat Thai with Kelly and Tony Sawyer; Au Cheval with Jon Glickman and Christy Callahan; Shaw's Crab House with Kevin Iwashina and Michael Tubbs
Alright, most of the time I try to not make this newsletter self-serving … but this is not one of those times.
My next film is Exhibiting Forgiveness, written and directed by Titus Kaphar, a brilliant painter who wove his art into the fabric of the film like no other film I have seen before. It’s a special one.
Tomorrow through November 2, the paintings featured in the film will be shown at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills. I still can’t decide if it is better to see the art first or the film, but either way, both the film and the exhibit are beyond powerful.
If you missed its premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, you can catch it at The Hamptons Film Festival and The Mill Valley Film Festival. Otherwise, it will be in theaters on October 18th.
An engaging live conversation with Governor Josh Shapiro at Genghis Cohen.
Who: Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro
Where: Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles
Why: Governor Shapiro joined me for a live conversation, where we discussed everything from key issues in battleground states, to why Donald Trump is one of the biggest threats to Israel, to the importance of open political dialogue.
Quote: “Kamala Harris is running against a guy who's the first person in our nation's history to refuse to peacefully transfer power … And I think it is important that we as a country, notwithstanding the trauma that Donald Trump brought to us, the chaos that he brought to us, we understand we did get through it, and we're going to get through this again.”
Our next Lunch With Jamie is set for 9/24 at 11:30 am PST, and joining the conversation will be Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (D-TX). I’m excited to talk to her about the Presidential race, Texas and our mutual love of SZA.
